The Offley Morris Men was formed in 1955 in Offley which is a village near Hitchin in North Hertfordshire. Although there are no active members currently living in the village, the side still maintains links with Offley.... more The background on this site represents the Offa Penny, our official badge which is worn at the centre of our baldrick (that's the cross-over bit worn over the upper part of the body). |
One of the most important parts of the Morris is the music. Without out musicians we could not perform our dances and even if we could, it would not be anywhere near as entertaining as it can be. The tunes are often taken from popular tunes of the 19th century and earlier but modified to fit the style of the dance and to fit in with the various figures. During the course of the year, we try to add some pictures from events that we attend and Friday evenings on our pub visits. We can't always do this for a number of reasons. The most obvious would be not having a camera, of course, but sometimes the weather is against us and the pictures would not be particularly interesting. We can't put all of the pictures on this site but we do try to give a good cross section when we can. Have a look at the picture page for the current selection. |

Did you know that Morris is the traditional male ritual dance of England? If you didn't then we are not surprised. When we are out dancing, particularly where there are tourists, we frequently get asked what Morris Dancing is and where did it come from. When we go abroad as visitors, we watch the local dancing and accept it a part of the holday and the tradition of that country. In England, for some reason, we don't really support our folk tradition. We grumble about Europe trying to get rid of English traditions but for some reason we don't always support them. So if you want to support English folk tradition and would like to get involved as a dancer, why not contact your local side.
